To All Potential Surrogates:
Surrogacy makes it possible for an intended parent who does not have the ability to successfully carry a pregnancy to full term to have a genetically-related child. As a surrogate, you gestate and give birth to the child. Your participation in and commitment to this program is invaluable to those parents who, for one reason or another, cannot gestate their own child. At the present time, there have been thousands of babies who have been born as the result of surrogacy arrangements.
IARC®'s surrogacy programs will make emotional and physical demands on your busy schedule and family life. Choosing to be a surrogate is a decision that must be made with your partner (if applicable) and family. It is not a decision to be taken lightly. You will be required to travel, attend medical appointments and take fertility medications. The time tables for treatment require strict adherence in order for the sophisticated medical treatments to be successful. As a fertile woman who has successfully given birth to her own children, however, your chances of achieving a pregnancy are much greater than the parents' have ever been. Many of these infertile couples have been through years of fertility treatments but, despite every effort, have been unable to have a child of their own. Your participation and commitment to this program is invaluable to a couple and can make an everlasting impact on their happiness. Your involvement in their lives and the gift you give them is enormous.
The following letter from a surrogate mother to the child she carried illustrates the adventure which you are considering:
You are the child of my body
But you are the child of your mother's heart.
You are the flesh of my flesh
But you are the joy of your mother's life.
You are the fulfillment of your mother's dreams
the answer to her prayers and the sparkle in her eyes.
From conception to birth you were part of my life and I love you dearly.
But from birth to life's end you will be a part of your mother's life
and she will not only love you - she will teach you what love is.
You are your own person but to become your own person will take many years of nurturing,
Nurturing which can only be accomplished through proper training and education throughout your childhood combined with the love, patience and understanding that only a mother can provide.
Yes, my child, you are your own
but you are equally your mother's own
and she will provide the nurturing you will need
as only a mother can provide to her very own.
